A smoothing treatment infuses hair with keratin and other conditioning agents to reduce frizz, cut down blow-dry time and add shine. Most last three to five months. That is the short version.
The longer version is what people actually want to know: what it will do to your hair, what the first few days look like, and whether it is worth it for how you actually live.
What smoothing does, and what it does not
It reduces frizz and volume while keeping your natural movement. It is not a relaxer, and it is not designed to leave you pin straight unless that is specifically what you want and we formulate for it.
This is the most common misunderstanding we correct in consultations. People arrive expecting either a magic wand or a chemical flattening, and it is neither. What it really does is take your hair’s worst day and make it much closer to your best one. The humidity stops winning. Your blow-dry takes half the time. Your natural texture is still there.
If you want to keep your curl but lose the frizz, say that. If you want it straighter, say that too. Same service category, different formulation and different processing.
Before: the consultation
Two things get decided before we book you.
Your hair’s condition. Smoothing on hair that is already compromised is not a good plan, and if your hair needs rebuilding first we will say so.
The order of operations with color. You can color before or after, but timing matters, and it is not the same answer for every client or every treatment. We walk you through the right order at consultation. Getting this wrong is the difference between a clean result and a color that shifts on you, so it genuinely is worth the conversation rather than booking blind.
The appointment itself
Clarifying wash, application, processing, and a thorough thermal seal section by section. It takes a while. Bring something to do.
The heat step is the part that makes it work, and it is also the part that cannot be rushed. A smoothing treatment done quickly is a smoothing treatment that does not last.
After: the first 72 hours
This is where people either protect their investment or undo it.
How soon you can wash depends on the specific treatment. Some formulas need a waiting period and some do not, which is why we give you clear aftercare instructions before you leave rather than a blanket rule. Follow the instructions you are handed, not what a friend was told about a different product.
Whatever your window is, these hold across the board:
- Keep it down and keep it loose. No tight ponytails, no clips, no tucking it behind your ears hard. A kink set into the hair during the settling period can stay.
- Nothing that creases it. Sunglasses on your head, a headband, a hair tie mark. All of it leaves a line.
- Silk or satin at night. A pillowcase change is a small cost for how much it protects the result.
The first few days feel strange, particularly if your hair has been big your whole life. It settles.
Keeping it for the full three to five months
Where treatments land in that range is mostly home care.
Sulfate-free shampoo. Not optional. Sulfates strip a smoothing treatment faster than anything else you can do, and this alone separates the three-month result from the five-month one.
Wash less often. Same logic as color. Every wash costs you a little.
Watch the salt and chlorine. Lake and pool water pull treatments out. Rinse straight after.
We build on L’ANZA healing care because clean, wellness-grade formulas protect the integrity of the hair rather than only its surface, and what you use at home is the same principle continued. Your stylist will send you out with what suits your hair specifically.
Who this is genuinely right for
It is right for you if you blow-dry your hair most days and resent it, if humidity undoes your work by lunchtime, or if your hair has become a scheduling problem rather than a pleasure.
It is not right for you if you love your natural texture and only dislike it on bad days, or if your hair is currently in poor condition and needs repair before anything else. We would rather tell you that than take the booking.

Smoothing is one of the services where the consultation genuinely changes the outcome, because the formulation and the order of operations with your color both get set there.
